Lasemese batiks are heavily influenced by the Chinese culture. Phoenix, a bird which would repeatedly die in a burst of flames and then be reborn from the ashes, represents rebirth, virtue and grace. Phoenix is believed to only appear in time of peace and prosperity, and goes into hiding during times of trouble. For this reason, it is often used for celebratory occasions such as weddings and royal ceremonies. In the imperial Chinese periods, the dragon represented the emperor and the phoenix represented the empress. Purple, being one of the hardest colors to achieve during the coloring process, is a modern twist of the red Chinese color.
