It's All In

the Details!

Everything in Lasem - from houses to food items - is a result of acculturation between the Chinese and the local Javanese cultures. And since Lasemese batiks peaked during the Dutch colonial period, then to cater to the Dutch market, the batiks also incorporated European elements.

Therefore, throughout centuries Lasemese batiks have picked up a lot of motifs due to their openness to other cultures. However, sadly, some are forgotten and left undocumented. There are at least 114 motifs (and counting), which 64 of them are Chinese-influenced. Some are also very detailed in terms of the background, which separate Lasemese from batiks from other regions.
